GeoGirls! 2008

A geospatial workshop connecting young women with technology, nature & geography!

The GIF recently partnered with Dyuti Sengupta, a PhD student in the Geography Department, to host the second annual GeoGirls! workshop. Funded by the American Association of University Women (AAUW), GeoGirls! is a series for elementary and junior high school girls from underserved communities in the Bay Area. 25 girls from four schools in Oakland joined us for lunch, GPS activities (including campus tree location data collection), and Google Earth science exploration. We all had a great time exploring the campus via GPS, which was a first visit to UCB for most of the participants. And though several have used Google Earth previous to the workshop, they were excited to explore the world and even find their school and homes in the imagery. We hope to continue this great program in the coming year.
